One reaches a certain age in life when a farm shop becomes wildly exciting. Quality, artisan food? Check. Ethically produced? Check. Sustainable and carbon footprint friendly? Check. Good for the local economy? Check. In an increasingly homogenised world, farm shops are a gateway into a more grounded, authentic way of shopping and eating. Farm shops completely embody the Lovely Local Indie ethos. Here’s my top twelve farm shops in Derbyshire.

Chatsworth Farm Shop

If the Chatsworth Estate is the jewel of the Peak District, then it’s farm shop has to be the queen (or perhaps Duchess?) of farm shops in Derbyshire. Situated in Pilsley, the Chatsworth farm shop is an utter delight for a foodie. Tatler lists it among it’s Top 8 best farm shops in the UK. There’s ample free parking and a traditional tea room style café with beautiful views across the surrounding countryside.

Understandably, this gorgeous shop can get incredibly busy. It’s worth shopping early morning or late afternoon for a quieter experience. Chatsworth farm shop is currently offering 10% discount to all NHS workers with a valid NHS Photo ID Card.

I love the café but if you’d rather head to a cosy pub, The Devonshire Arms at Pilsley is just five minutes walk away.

Tori and Ben’s Farm Shop

Melbourne, Derby. DE73 8DD

Farmers first and foremost, Ben, a fourth generation farmer and Tori a design and marketing graduate set about farming with passion, provenance and pride. Their passion for farming and love of food is evident throughout their award winning butchery and farm shop. Tori and Ben’s Farm Shop has been recognized as one of the best farm shops in the UK by the likes of The Telegraph and Olive Magazine so definitely belongs on the list of the best farm shops in Derbyshire. It’s small, but stocks a lovely selection of artisan food, much of it local.

Tori and Ben’s have built up a national reputation for their fabulous dry aged Longhorn beef. These are genuinely some of the very best steaks I have had in my whole life! But also check out home reared grass fed lamb, free range Packington pork and chicken. There’s a good selection of vibrantly fresh salads, home cooked pasties and pies along with freshly baked bread. Vegetables are grown in the fields of local market gardeners.

Tori and Ben’s farm shop is located in beautiful Kings Newton near Melbourne, just 2 miles from the farm itself. There’s ample parking and a lovely al fresco eating area. The garden at the back ordinarily offers eating facilities along with a giant sand pit, ride on tractors, mud play kitchens and, most importantly, peace and quiet!

Stretton Hall Farm Shop

Clay Cross, S45 9AP

A relative newcomer, and hidden in the back lanes between Clay Cross and Ashover, Stretton Hall Farm Shop is an absolute hidden gem. Family run, and stocking a good range of local artisan products, fresh meat, vegetables and so on. Their cake counter is a thing of wonder and they make excellent barista style coffee. Plenty of free parking.

Croots

Duffield, DE56 4AQ    

Croots Farm Shop is based in the beautiful Derbyshire hills with picturesque views across fields of Shire horses. The family run business place a real emphasis on quality, local suppliers. The award winning farm shop offers home-produced lamb, locally produced beef, poultry and free range pork plus homemade sausages, pies, quiches, cakes etc.

The Lambton Larder

Situated in the centre of Bakewell, (with street parking just across the road) The Lambton Larder is delightful shop, jam packed full of foodie treats. Admittedly it’s a deli rather than a farm shop, but here’s why I think it warrants a spot in my list of the best of best farm shops in Derbyshire. Co-owned by Alice and Blake who are both passionate about the Peak District, good food and great customer service. Alice has a strong food background, having spent most of her working life in the industry, either in kitchens or front of house. Running her own deli is a dream come true. The Lambton Larder only sells produce they firmly believe in and know to be delicious. They have quickly gained a good reputation locally for their extensive cheese counter with a particular emphasis on British cheese (don’t worry , they’ve still got the European favourites). Don’t miss the deliciously flaky breakfast pastries and barista coffee (currently takeaway only, but in normal times you can sit outside and watch the world go by).

Marsh Green

Chesterfield, S45 0DX

Marsh Green is very much a working farm. I love that you can have a nosey at the animals in the various barns dotted around the car park. There’s a well-stocked farm shop and decent café. In normal times they have a beautifully sunny courtyard to enjoy homecooked food and the tastiest cakes.

Brown and Green

Little Eaton, DE21 5DB

Situated inside Derby Garden Centre, Brown and Green perhaps lacks some of the charm of many of the other establishments I’ve mentioned. But for sheer convenience alone, it warrants a place on my list of the best farm shops in Derbyshire. Situated just off the A38, with plenty of free parking, it’s handy for people commuting out of Derby and means they can pick up something far more exciting than a convenience store ready meal. There’s a good range of fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce and a commitment to high standards of animal welfare and fairly traded products.

Adam’s Happy Hens

Chesterfield, S42 7BH

Adam’s Happy Hens is a lovely little farm shop on the outskirts of Chesterfield. There are various animals to see so a nice trip out with little ones. Coffees, ice creams and delicious homemade cakes available.

Highfield House Farm Shop

Ashover, Chesterfield S45 0LW

Family run, Highfield House Farm Shop has been open since 1996. Everything sold is sourced as locally as possible. There are also some traditional tea rooms. Don’t miss their Derbyshire oatcakes! Lots of free parking available.

Oakfield Farm

Oakfield Farm in Stanley Common near Ilkeston has operated as a small farm shop since 2005. In 2018 it expanded into the glorious gem it is today. A purpose built, energy efficient building housing a cafe, butchers and artisan farm shop. The cafe serves up generous portions of home cooked breakfasts and lunches and they even served a perfect flat white. Highly recommend.

Welbeck Farm Shop

Worksop, S80 3LW

Just over the Nottinghamshire border, Welbeck is one of the great historic country estates. Their award winning farm shop is a destination in its own right with the free to visit Portland Collection museum and the delightful Harley Café. The Welbeck Farm Shop is an utter delight. The ethos is based on delicious food that has been grown or produced in an ethical and sustainable way.

Sauced Here

Sauced Here isn’t a brick and mortar shop, but I do firmly believe it belongs on this list of the best farm shops in Derbyshire. Sauced Here offers all the convenience and flexibility of an online shop and ‘supermarket style’ delivery, but with the delightful quality of local artisan produce sourced from over forty farms across the Peak District. This would make an excellent alternative to arranging a supermarket delivery whilst enjoying a short break in the Peak District. The best of both worlds!
