I know lots of us are keen to buy small and local where possible. I’ve sourced the very best lovely, local, indie gifts from a range of Derbyshire small businesses. There’s only the very best here, at prices to suit a range of budgets. Everything on here I would be happy to gift my own Mum or would be delighted to receive. It’s always worth ordering sooner than later. This is particularly true for anything handmade or personalised. Completely updated and expanded for 2022.

Derbyshire Flowers

For a fully eco friendly option, Happy Roots Farm in Oxcroft (near Bolsover and Clowne) have stunning arrangements of British flowers. Lots of the foliage and flowers are grown on the farm by Laurenne and her family in a mindful, sustainable way. Anything extra bought in is always from sustainably minded British suppliers. Mother’s Day arrangements are available for pre-order now here, for collection from the farm anytime on the day before Mothers day (the Saturday), or up to midday on Mothering Sunday. Prices start at just £10 for a jam jar style posy.

Cool, quirky, lovely things

Design 44 has a huge range of gifts, cards and gift wrap on it’s website. Have it delivered or click and collect from their shop in the Derbion centre. Particularly check out their Mother’s Day boxes, carefully curated by owner Jade with a big emphasis on supporting small brands. Hand picked, stress free stylish gifting made easy!

The Peak District Candle Co. handmake candles in the heart of Derbyshire. Owner, Anna hand pours the candles from soy wax, a renewable, sustainable material which is biodegradable and non toxic. The candles are so popular that the dedicated Mother’s Day range is now sold out online. However, any of the products would make lovely gifts (and honestly who doesn’t love a candle?!).

Many of you will be familiar with Derbyshire based, design led brand Darwin & Gray. Named after founder and maker, Stacey Gray and her gorgeous cocker spaniel, Darwin. Famous for her clean, minimalistic designs, her use of natural materials and nailing the captions; Darwin and Gray has been much copied but never rivalled. Last year Stacey launched a new range of glassware, perfectly timed for Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day. My favourites are the ‘Tired as F*ck’ glass mug and the ‘Adulting is Sh*t’ wine glass. Expect to see them plastered all over Instagram soon! Of course there’s also plenty of more traditional and sentimental slogans. The range launches on February 27th at 8pm. Some of the pieces are strictly limited and are likely to sell out quickly.

Derbyshire based stationery retailer, The Paper Collective was founded by stationery addict Laura Brooks to bring functional, beautiful stationery to help people get organised, and capture and realise their goals. For the gift that keeps on giving, a stationery subscription box would be a dream gift for stationery lovers. There’s also an online shop with enviable stationery. I love the Winging It notepad (£14), Mother Knows Best pencils (£12)… and pretty much everything really! The Wanderlust Travel Notebook Set (£25) would be a lovely gift for travel lovers to capture their memories. [AD – gifted items received]

Set up by husband and wife team, Liam and Kerry, Letterbox Love have a range of pretty jewellery. All fabulously packaged and with free delivery. There’s lots of sweet, sentimental gifts, such as…. But I also love that they sell gifts for everyone. Maybe you’re shopping for a step mum or Dad’s partner or girlfriend? The ‘Like a Mother’ bracelet comes with a sweet poem and acknowledges that motherhood isn’t always a purely a simple biological bond. Me & Thee is a another design led business set up by Chesterfield based, Maria, that takes quirky Northern and Derbyshire sayings and prints them on to mugs, coasters, prints etc. Take a trip down memory lane with phrases that your Gran might have said. “Be Reyt” is probably the one we all need to cling on to this year (or “Chuffing ‘ell!” depending on your outlook).  Shop on Etsy or support a local shop by buying at Shop Indie in Chesterfield.

Rose & Bee Textiles sells beautiful homeware and gifts handmade by owner, Caroline in her Matlock studio. Many of the products use snippets of gorgeous and quintessentially English, Liberty fabrics bended with neutrals for a contemporary feel. My favourites are the personalised Liberty monogram banners (which have featured in Country Living Magazine), make up bags and the Liberty beauty gift set which contains a set of eight reusable makeup remover pads (& cotton wash bag), a signature rope bowl perfect for storing the makeup pad and a makeup bag, all in your choice of Liberty fabric.

Orgill Originals is a family run business based in Breaston. Father and daughter team, Nicole and Neil are self taught in leather craft using traditional methods and a classic style. Every item is unique. I particularly love the ‘hello lovely’ folded leather coin purse for just £15.50, the hand stitched camera bags and the convertible leather backpack and shoulder bag. Just be aware that the majority of their leather goods are made to order and can have a lead time of 1-2 weeks before dispatch. Order early!

My Bags of Stuff is a Derby based family run business that has quickly built up an iconic range of personalised bags. My favourite are the personalised tote bags. Prices start at £5 for a personalised small drawstring bag. Allow 14 working days for delivery.

Elsie Moss Botanical sell natural, handcrafted vegan soaps handmade in the traditional cold process by owner Lisa in her studio in Derbyshire. The finest cold pressed oils, skin loving butters, plant based botanicals and steam-distilled essential oils are used to create beautifully gentle, yet luxurious bars of soap that are packaged without plastic.

Another eco friendly option is Dronfield based BumblesJungle. Born out of a love of gardening and garden produce, BunglesJungle skincare is made with 100% natural ingredients and beautifully packaged using recycled and reusable materials. Sarah kindly gifted me a sample of the calendula balm and I’ve been really impressed. It’s delicately scented with lavender and rose geranium essential oils so soothing and calming to use and has been a wonderful tonic to my over-washed hands. Reasonable priced and  available to buy on their Etsy shop.

Homeware

The Neutrals Nursery is a design company run by Chesterfield mother, Natale. Predominantly selling neutral coloured nursery decor, Natale also handmakes some gorgeous gifts that would be perfect for Mother’s Day. I particularly love their family names prints. Fully personalised and handwritten so no two are ever the same. Also check out the flags.

Hide and Thread is a small, independent furniture business ran by skilled carpenter Matt and other half Catherine, creating handmade and bespoke furniture from its workshop in the vintage quarter on Dale Rd, Matlock. There’s handmade footstools, ottomans, benches and hallstands but also a beautiful range of throws and blankets.

Foodie Treats

A foodie hamper is often very well-received, particularly if full of lovely, local, indie delights! Lambton’s Larder in Bakewell does a gorgeous range of hampers. Your local farm shop would no doubt be delighted to help you put together something personalised and meaningful. You can read about my favourite farm shops here.

Macarons always make a gorgeous gift – and are perfect to enjoy with a glass of fizz. Perfect Peaks Patisserie based near Darley Dale offer nationwide delivery. Spring flavours include strawberry daiquiri, Raffaello, rose lychee and raspberry, passionfruit and tangerine, matcha and cherry, blackcurrant. Order by DM via Facebook or Instagram.

Another small artisan is Yohan’s  set up by pastry chef Chloe, who creates the most beautiful handcrafted artisan chocolate. The jewel like chocolates themselves are divine little works of art. The brand has a strong commitment to sustainability. Dairy products are sourced from local dairy farms most of Chloe’s suppliers are in the Peak District. Yohan’s is strictly limited, but expect a few restocks before Mother’s Day. Follow Yohan’s on Instagram to be the first to hear of re-stocks!

I would also recommend Bakewell based Holdsworth, a family run company who hand make luxury chocolates using the finest ingredients. Stocked in the most exclusive department stores and food halls (think Harrods, Selfridges etc), locally you can find Holdsworth chocolates in a range of local farm shops and direct from their website. Check out their Classic Marc de Champagne Truffles, Espresso Martini Cocktail Truffles and the ‘I Love You’ Gift Box.

Experiences

I’m a huge fan of gifting experiences. Lots of women I know would LOVE to receive a gift voucher for a spa. Locally, I would recommend the Garden Secret Spa at Ringwood Hall. It’s small, but perfectly formed, you can buy a range of different gift vouchers here, starting at £59. I haven’t yet had the chance to visit the new luxury Ensana spa at Buxton but it’s named as Spa Hotel of the Year by The Times, so it’s probably a safe bet!

If funds don’t stretch to a full spa day, it’s still possible to gift a pampering session. Support your local salon by buying gift vouchers from them. My recommendations would be The Sanctuary in Chesterfield, Full FX in West Hallam near Ilkeston or Lunula Nails and Beauty in Derby. You can’t go wrong with a voucher for a massage, facial or manicure – or let the recipient choice by just buying an amount to spend. It’s also a lovely way to support the beauty industry which has been hit hard by the lockdown restrictions.

Sauced Here sells a full range of experience gift vouchers such as cookery classes, including learning to cook Afro-Caribbean food with Stella Kisob, chocolate making and tasting workshops, photography and yoga. Check out the full range here.

A gift voucher for her favourite restaurant is always a good idea. For instance, you can order an e-voucher from Berkeley Inns which is delivered by email (perfect for those last minute panics!) and then redeemed at any of their lovely pubs, like the Cock Inn in Muggington, The Bluebell at Kirk Langley, The Cow at Dalbury Lees, The Horseshoes at Long Lane or the recently award winning Meynell Ingram just over the Staffordshire border. If you’d prefer a physical gift voucher these can be bought at any of the venues.

Brick and mortar shops

Let’s not forget brick and mortar stores. Our local high streets need our help more than ever before. Despite being shut for lockdown many lovely shops are still selling online. Many offer gift wrapping and local delivery. My favourites are Design 44 in Derby, Shop Indie and Libby’s in Chesterfield, Bow Boutique in Matlock, Handmade Design Ashbourne and The Bottle Kiln in West Hallam.

Bow Boutique is the prettiest shop in the centre of Matlock selling a carefully curated collection of design-led products, with a hint of quirky charm. In normal times, their unique combination of vintage pieces and locally sourced design-led products ensure every visit is a sheer delight (especially when combined with a visit to their Garden Room Café).

Libby’s in Chesterfield is another great one stop shop. There’s loads of choice on their website, including a good range of jewellery and beautiful scarves, homeware and other delightful gifts.
