16 Chesterfield Takeaways

Here’s the low down on the very best Chesterfield takeaways. No faceless chains, just lovely, local, independent restaurants offering delicious food for you to enjoy at home.

A Friday night takeaway has become a sacred part of our lockdown week. Here’s my edit of the absolute best restaurants in the local area offering food for collection and/or delivery. The very best Chesterfield takeaways! It’s not just fast food either, there’s everything from gastro pubs to high end dining.

Gastro pubs

One of my all-time favourite gastro pubs is The Tickled Trout in Barlow. Their arancini is better than anything I’ve ever eaten in Italy, their sourdough pizzas are divine, as are their truffle fries and Vietnamese dressed halloumi. In fact, everything is so good! I’ve eaten here fairly regularly ever since moving to Chesterfield in 2016 and have never had a dud meal. Most of their regular menu is available for collection. I haven’t had enough takeaways from here, mainly because we are both lazy and once the child is asleep on a Friday night we both just want to crack open the wine rather than go and collect… but if that doesn’t bother you The Trout would be my number one recommendation of an exceptionally great Chesterfield takeaway.

The Bulls Head in Holymoorside is another great gastro pub worth checking out. On Friday night they serve pizzas, burgers and a couple of gastro pub style meals complete with restaurant style starters and desserts. They also have an incredibly popular Sunday roast takeaway menu. I love the ethos of The Bulls Head, they pride themselves on using high quality, local suppliers.

Pizza and other Italian delights

Pizza is probably my favourite food of all time. For truly authentic Italian style pizza I would recommend Lombardi’s, the much loved family run restaurant. It’s worth booking a delivery slot in advance as they do get booked up. Nonna’s on Chatsworth Road is another great option for Italian food. Both Lombardi’s and Nonna’s run a fairly extensive menu of deliciously authentic Italian options. Pizza Pi is another popular option. The menu is smaller – but if pizza is your thing you definitely won’t be disappointed. There’s a range of garlic breads, a couple of other starters, a full range of delicious pizzas including lots of creative and slightly left field toppings, loaded fries and some delicious desserts. There’s also a full vegan menu.

Turkish and Greek takeaway

One of our favourite Chesterfield takeaways is our local Turkish restaurant, Afat’s Grill. I’ve found it offers the freshest, healthiest tasting takeaway food out of everywhere we’ve tried. Simple ingredients, cooked well. I tend to order the chicken grill for my main course – large chunks of succulent chicken breast served with the most perfectly cooked rice and a beautiful rainbow salad. A little hack – you can add free bread and olives to your order (under the ‘extras’ section of the menu).

If Mediterranean food floats your boat, also check out Odyssey Greek Restaurant. We’ve really enjoyed eating at their restaurant prior to lockdown. Their takeaway menu is pretty limited which is completely understandable under the current circumstances, but if you enjoy Greek food this is definitely worth trying. I love the halloumi wrap.

Breakfast, lunch and healthy options from Chesterfield takeaways

A good option for the health conscious is Qoozies, a much loved Chesterfield institution which is usually serving up pancakes, smoothies and health food fast food style in its pretty restaurant. You can collect in person or have it delivered via City Grab. We’ve tended to use Qoozies for a weekend breakfast treat. Having breakfast delivered has to be the ultimate indulgence and I’ve become somewhat addicted to their Biscoff and strawberry pancake. But there’s also lots of lunch options. The salads are really fresh and packed with interesting ingredients (and fully customisable) and don’t miss their vitamin packed smoothies and protein shakes.

Something different

My husband and I have quite different tastes in food but somewhere we both enjoy is The Galleon Steakhouse. Saturday in our house is ‘Steak Saturday’ so this gets my hubby’s seal of approval. I can’t get my head around the idea of steak being delivered but there are loads of other options. I’ve particularly enjoyed the salmon with hollandaise sauce and herbed new potatoes. The deep fried brie starter is also pretty epic!

Thai is one of my favourite cuisines and Thai Thai delivers via City Grab. I tend to get chicken satay and then a vegetable green Thai curry, both are excellent. Thai Pavilion at the top of Glumangate is also good but doesn’t deliver to my knowledge.

Teepees Street Food is also on City Grab and a good option for something different. I’ve loved seeing some more exotic and adventurous options on their menu. They do everything from burgers to pizzas to poutine (made with authentic imported Canadian gravy and real cheese curds) as well as dirty fries, fried chicken and waffles, katsu curry, mac and cheese, ramen and poke bowls. There’s also a full dessert menu consisting of freshly made waffles and a range of sweet treats (I can’t resist adding the pic n mix sweet cup). I’ve found some of the food a little greasy, but not enough to put me off re-ordering, and if you’re bored of your usual options this is definitely worth a try.

A brand new Chesterfield pop-up is El Nacho (find them on Facebook or Instagram). They literally only sell nachos but if that’s your thing, you’re in for a real treat! For just £7 you can choose the flavour of tortilla chips, the type of cheese and then four toppings, all of which are super fresh and authentic tasting. The pineapple salsa in particular was amazing. You simply have to try it! In theory the box serves two but if it’s your main meal I’d push the boat out and get one each! (I was gifted a box but I’m not under any obligation to post this.)

Likewise, if Mexican is your thing, Cocina Familiar in Wingerworth are worth a try, and they’re now on City Grab. I really enjoyed the nachos (dips are freshly prepared from scratch and served in separate containers for you to dip into or serve to your taste at home). I also enjoyed the chicken burrito (slow cooked for maximum flavour). Neither were particularly hot in terms of chilli so you might need to add your own at home if you’re a chilli fiend like me. The chips and patatas bravas were not to my taste but I thought the Mexican food was good and the burritos are HUGE. They also do some really good value mid week offers – check their socials for details. [AD – gifted]

Chesterfield takeaways for special occasions

For something a bit more special, I’d recommend Casa’s dining at home service. They’re currently only operating on Sunday lunchtimes, but there’s a good range of starters, main courses and desserts that can be delivered to your door for £20 for two courses or £25 for three. We ordered from Casa for our wedding anniversary last year, given that we couldn’t do our usual weekend away, and were really impressed with the quality of both the food and the presentation. This is definitely a cut above your usual takeaway. Casa have absolutely nailed the dining at home experience.

We recently tried Van Dyk using the City Grab app. If you’re within an 8 mile radius you can order for delivery directly from Van Dyk’s. This is an excellent choice, especially if you want more restaurant style food. It’s pretty much restaurant sized portions and restaurant pricing. I know this winds some people up but I LOVE being able to get this style of food delivered to the comfort of my door. I had the silkiest, creamiest chicken liver parfait with the most wonderful rhubarb compote, then a second starter of a crispy duck salad with some Aspen fries. I had to look these up, but they’re fries with truffle oil and parmesan! This portion was actually massive and (unless we maybe just got lucky?) would have served two people comfortably. My husband had their famous cornflake tart with pink custard which looked amazing but I really do struggle to resist a sticky toffee pudding and theirs was an exceptionally good one. I didn’t enjoy the garlic focaccia (maybe it just didn’t travel well?) but would otherwise highly recommend!

Another fabulous option for a special occasion is a Dear Chef dine at home box. These need ordering in advance and then collecting from The Cricket Inn in Totley in Sheffield (less than a twenty minute drive from Chesterfield). For £30pp you’ll get a chef designed and prepared three course meal, plus bread and treats all ready to go. I was kindly gifted one before Christmas and it was a doddle to prepare and made for a really good date night. (I’m under no obligation to post about this by the way.)
