Sin Carne Cantina, Matlock Bath REVIEW

This restaurant is now closed. Please head to my guide to vegan restaurants for other options.

Sin Carne Cantina is a vegan Latin American-inspired café restaurant in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. It’s located just off the main drag in Matlock Bath. However, it’s a little set back from the road, easily missed unless you are looking for it. Find it by heading towards the iconic Fishpond pub and it’s a few doors back towards the centre of Matlock Bath.

Inside it’s pretty basic café décor – although the rear of the cafe has stunning views.

The menu is reassuringly small. It’s fully vegan and 100% plant based (the name translates as ‘without meat’). I’m not vegan myself. However, I often pick vegetarian, and sometimes vegan, dishes both at home and out and about. Whilst I genuinely love vegetables, beans etc, I find the idea of meat substitutes pretty off-putting so was pleased to see there were a few options on the menu that didn’t contain this sort of thing, for example the loaded burrito (which sounded delicious).

Vegan Mexican menu in Matlock Bath

I had the Buddha bowl which consisted of coconut rice topped with refried beans; coconut chipotle roasted corn; fresh, chunky guacamole; mojito salsa and pickled slaw. This option was gluten free. Everything was really fresh and tasty. It wasn’t overly spicy – in fact, I’d have loved more heat. It felt really nourishing and healthy.

My dining companion, regular guest writer, Charlotte (check out some of her posts!) had the sweet potato quesadilla which sounded delicious.

There were also nachos, a mac and cheese bowl, meatball sub and a toasted deli sandwich. Everything was reasonably priced, starting at £6.50 for a deli sandwich served with coleslaw and nachos.

We didn’t order dessert (despite there being fresh apple pie just out of the oven!) but I did notice a sign saying there were various flavours of vegan ice cream. It’s also a place to go for coffees, speciality teas, vegan hot chocolates etc.

Go for:

Well priced, tasty vegan food and really friendly staff.

Kids menu (also 100% plant based) and pushchair friendly (not sure what the toilets are like).

There is a short stay car park opposite. Pay and display – cash only. Matlock Bath also has a train station and Sin Carne Cantina would only be a ten minute walk from there.
