Figaro is an award-winning vegan café bistro in Wingerworth on the outskirts of Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire.

In the two years since it’s been open, Figaro has firmly established itself as a favourite destination amongst people both looking for plant based options as well as those just seeking delicious, healthy options – with people regularly travelling nearly an hour to visit.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The decor is an eclectic mix of shabby chic – old church pews, mismatched wooden furniture, beautifully dark coloured walls offset with neon signs and colourful modern art. Tables are laid with fresh meadow flowers and there was a little ‘book swap’ bookcase. I got the impression that Figaro is very much a community hub, it’s situated right next to the park, so is the perfect place for refreshments after a little stroll. It’s also mere steps away from the children’s play area, and has plenty of family friendly features (kids menu, high chairs, baby changing facilities and pushchair friendly).
Food at Figaro is freshly prepared and cooked in house, largely from whole foods. Owner, Rowan (who also runs the hairdressers next door) is keen to avoid serving overly processed food wherever possible. In addition to everything being plant based (so suitable for vegans as well as vegetarians), there are also lots of gluten free options.
There’s an extensive vegan breakfast menu including a ‘Big Figaro’ – a plant based spin on a Full English. I was very tempted by the smashed avocado but eventually opted for Pancake & Berries (£9.50). The presentation of this was immaculate – a generous portion of fluffy pancakes adorned with various different berries, flavoursome berry compote sweetened with maple syrup and a gentle sprinkling of mint leaves and seeds. It looked incredible and tasted even better.

As regular readers of the blog will know, I’m not vegan myself. If I’m honest, I did miss cow’s milk in my flat white – so next time would have a black coffee or speciality tea – but the pancakes were the best I’d had anywhere. There is no way I would have an inkling they were vegan had I not known in advance. I would definitely go back for those alone. A gentleman on a neighbouring table ordered the avocado toast and that also looked amazing.

Lunch offerings include sandwiches, salads, a pasta of the day, sharing boards and pizza. As well as their daytime offering, Figaro is open Thursday to Saturday evenings, and regularly puts on special themed evenings. Afternoon tea is also available from Thursday to Sunday from 3pm to 5.30pm.

Service throughout was exemplary. From the exceptionally warm welcome to the care and knowledge the staff showed, their dedication shone through and made for a lovely customer experience.
